It’s no secret that many fans were disappointed with the appearance of the titular villain in X-Men: Apocalypse. While his purple visage was vastly improved in post-production, it was still noticeably different from the look we grew accustomed to seeing in the comics and the classic animated series. The internet was awash in Ivan Ooze memes, and even comparisons to cosplayers who had managed to do it better.
As a massive fan of the character, I reminded myself that we were lucky to get him on the big screen in the first place. I told myself that being super accurate in appearance wasn’t a huge deal, as long as the characterization was right. And I almost had myself convinced.
And now this. Oh, the disappointment. It *burns.*
As it turns out, the first plans for En Sabah Nur were incredible. During the filming of Days of Future Past, concept artist and creature designer Jared Krichevsky was hired to draw up plans for the character. And they’re so perfect, it boggles the mind as to why director Bryan Singer made the decision to go in a different direction.
Krichevsky’s credits include Wolverine, Amazing Spider-Man 2, Maleficent, Pixels, Independence Day: Resurgence, the renowned series Stranger Things, and the forthcoming Pete’s Dragon, Wonder Woman, and the remake of Stephen King’s It. Clearly, the dude knows his stuff. It’s why you hired him in the first place, Singer. So why, in the name of all that’s holy, WHY did you not use this design?
Let us know what you think of this look for the ancient mutant. I’ll just be in the corner, crying over what could have been.
What do you think of the alternate designs? Tell us below!
