With the success of Deadpool last year and Logan this year, it’s become apparent that having an R-Rating isn’t the same box office poison it once was and now it sounds as though more studios may take this approach if a recent survey is anything to go by. Read on to find out more.
Website Fandango ran a poll recently asking moviegoers what they would like to see in future films, 71% of those asked would like to see more R-Ratings in the Superhero genre. 86% of the people asked were ‘interested in seeing a more violent, adult X-Men movie this weekend’. Something which will certainly give studios a lot to think about with their future plans.
An R-Rating definitely suits characters such as Deadpool and Wolverine, with Logan finally giving us an accurate look at to what razor sharp claws would actually do a person, there are others where it would be unnecessary. Could you imagine an R-Rated Spider-Man film? With Carnage committing mass murder and Kragen on the hunt…..actually that sounds awesome.
Many films can stay true to the character with a PG-13 rating, as most of the superhero films over the last decade have shown us. Part of the success is the fact that it can appeal to a mass audience, as it should be with these characters, many of whom were actually created with children in mind.
It’s unlikely at this point that Disney would ever create an R-Rated film which would alienate part of its audience. The MCU has found its way around this by bringing some of its darker characters to the small screen such as Daredevil or The Punisher on Netflix and Warner Brothers have used the home media release to debut the R-Rated versions of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad.
However with Deadpool raking in $783 Million last year and Logan expecting to bring in $170 Million this weekend, perhaps more studios will be willing to take a risk on the R-Rating.
