The last we heard of Todd McFarlane’s Spawn reboot, he had completed the script and was searching for a studio to produce it. You can read more about that here. Unfortunately now it seems the film is going to be delayed once more.
According to Syfy Wire, the film isn’t being delayed because of a lack of interest or anything of that sort. Rather, the delay stems from McFarlane’s desire to keep creative control.
“So I’m going, I’m not selling it but if you want to see the rough draft, I’ll send it to you. But just so everybody knows, I write, produce, direct, non-negotiable.”
McFarlane continues by explaining he understands the hesitation of studios to allow him so much power, and how he intends to overcome their worries.
“I wouldn’t ask to be a newbie director on a script that was going to have an eighty million budget for it. Why? Because as a CEO of my own corporation, I wouldn’t take that deal. I wouldn’t stick out $80 million and go, ‘they’re going to put a rookie and he’s going to basically be in charge of it.’ So I’ve created this tight little one that I keep saying, I think I can shoot it for ten.”
It’s certainly a risky plan, but maybe that’s something Hollywood should consider doing. Film studios these days take very little risks, and perhaps that’s what something like Spawn needs to become a hit.
