MMA champion and Hollywood up-and-comer Ronda Rousey has thrown her name into the ring for a major Marvel role — and fans are taking notice.
During a Reddit AMA (“Ask Me Anything”) with fans, Rousey was asked what superhero she would most want to portray on the big screen. Her answer was short but clear:
“A lot of the good ones have been taken, but I’d like to vie for Miss Marvel!”
It’s likely that Rousey was referring to Captain Marvel, the Carol Danvers version, who is set to headline her own solo film in 2018. While “Miss Marvel” was an earlier title the character used in the comics, most fans and industry insiders believe that’s the role Rousey had in mind. The upcoming Captain Marvel movie is a key part of Marvel Studios’ Phase Three plans, and casting for the titular role has yet to be officially confirmed.
Rousey’s comment immediately sparked a wave of online chatter. The former UFC bantamweight champion has been slowly making her way into Hollywood, with roles in Furious 7, Entourage, and The Expendables 3. She’s also set to star in a biopic about her own life — playing herself — which is currently in development at Paramount Pictures.
Though some fans have voiced concern over Rousey’s acting range, others are excited by the idea of a real-life fighter bringing the physically commanding Carol Danvers to life. After all, Marvel Studios has taken unconventional casting paths before — and more often than not, those choices have paid off.
What makes Carol Danvers a compelling character is more than just her strength and combat skills. She’s a decorated Air Force pilot with a sharp wit and a strong sense of justice — a complex mix of power, responsibility, and leadership. Any actress cast in the role will need to balance those elements while anchoring what’s expected to be a major character in the MCU going forward.
At this point, Rousey’s comment is simply an expression of interest — not an official audition or studio movement. But it certainly adds a new layer to the growing speculation over who will take on the Captain Marvel mantle.
With the film still two years away and plenty of casting buzz to come, there’s still time for surprises.
