As happens every day on Twitter, there’s a new popular hashtag movement trending about some movie or something. As a seeming companion to last week’s #GiveElsaAGirlfriend, there’s now a trending hashtag for #GiveCaptainAmericaABoyfriend.
Most of this is from the rabid fandom shippers of Cap and Bucky Barnes, his childhood friend and companion throughout the recent Captain America: Civil War.
When asked about the potential relationship, Chris Evans had this to say:
“That wouldn’t be so bad. It’s just never been part of my approach to the character. My subtext didn’t involve that dynamic. I think even with the first Captain America film you see how drawn he is to Peggy Carter […] I thought I put all that in the final scene, but maybe I didn’t. Maybe I was just gazing at Sebastian too much.”
There’s not too much to make of it. Due to negative perceptions of LGBT relationships in many lucrative box office countries (mainly Russia and China), we will probably never see a gay protagonist for any near-future blockbuster movies. Plus, Cap already has a girlfriend (maybe) in Sharon Carter.
I’d say people should root for Deadpool, the guy already banned in China, to get some same-sex macking, if they really want an LGBT superhero main character anytime soon. But we may see that in Deadpool 2 anyway regardless.
