Marvel’s Most Wanted got the ax before it ever aired, leaving Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. as the only Marvel property currently on network television.
But fear not, citizens. ABC network president Channing Dungey says that there are several series in the early stages of development. The new exec addressed TV critics at TCA 2016, sounding very hopeful about Marvel’s future at ABC.
“Since I’ve been in this role, we’ve been in a number of really terrific conversations with the Marvel team. We’re actually sitting down in two weeks to discuss our next steps,” she tells IGN.
Some of these properties have been previously announced, such as John Ridley’s rumored show, and the comedy Damage Control (which may or may not still happen, since DC’s Powerless – which has very similar themes – will be airing this season). Others, she says, are “different things – totally new ideas and intellectual properties.
She also said that they’re hoping to be able to build a cohesive TV universe, similar to that of Marvel’s Netflix shows. This would involve plenty of crossovers, cameos, and events from one being mentioned in another, just like the MCU films. It’s an ambitious goal, but one Marvel has plenty of experience with. And, just as it all started with Iron Man on the big screen, the seeds of a small screen universe have already been planted as well.
We’re very, very excited for the plans they have for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D season 4.” Although she couldn’t say more on that subject, she did address the decision not to air Marvel’s Most Wanted. “At the end of the day, it did not feel as strong as some of the other pilots we shot. We talked about it with Marvel, and we all came to an agreement that we wanted to figure out what is the next show we want to do together. We want it to be as creatively strong as it can be.”
That may sound like a lot of talking without saying much, but we do know one thing for sure: Marvel TV boss Jeph Loeb stated that there are “nine or ten Marvel shows in some stage of development,” so I think it’s save to say that comics will be a significant presence on TV for quite some time.
