Mike Colter Reveals Whether or Not He Thinks LUKE CAGE Will Be In The Marvel Films

Mike Colter says Marvel’s Netflix heroes like Luke Cage likely won’t appear in MCU films due to tone differences and scheduling issues.
    By Jonathan EdwardsOctober 4, 2016

For fans hoping to see Marvel’s Netflix characters like Luke Cage, Daredevil, or Jessica Jones cross over into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe, the latest comments from Luke Cage star Mike Colter may be a bit of a letdown.

While appearing on Power 105.1 FM’s Breakfast Club radio show, Colter was asked about the possibility of his character appearing in one of Marvel’s blockbuster films. Despite growing fan interest in having the TV heroes share the screen with characters like Iron Man or Captain America, Colter didn’t sound optimistic.

“What we do is really unique. We’re adult kind of oriented. We’re not PG-13. We’re not really for the mass audiences, crowd pleasing, family oriented. We have sex scenes. We have, you know, adult situations, and while I think it’d be nice to be in the films, I don’t know if we want to dilute what we’re doing that makes us very unique.”

Colter’s comments reflect the ongoing separation between Marvel’s television and movie properties. While all are technically under the same universe umbrella, the tone and structure of the Netflix shows have set them apart. Unlike the bright, family-friendly tone of many MCU films, shows like Luke Cage, Daredevil, and Jessica Jones deal with heavier themes, grittier violence, and more grounded storytelling.

The actor also noted that scheduling is another major barrier. According to Colter, the tight and conflicting production timelines between Marvel’s film and television branches make a crossover logistically difficult.

“That being said, you know Marvel, if they can make it work I’m sure it’d be nice, but it’s really scheduling. They schedule movies years in advance, we’re shooting TV series year round. It’s very tough to just kind of make things just work the way you want to because it’s just so much going on.”

This isn’t the first time fans have been told not to expect a full crossover. Despite numerous Easter eggs and references between Marvel Studios and Marvel Television, the two divisions have largely operated independently — and Colter’s statements further reinforce that status quo.

Still, for longtime Marvel readers, it’s a bit frustrating. In the comics, these characters coexist in the same world. Luke Cage has been an Avenger. Daredevil has teamed up with Spider-Man and fought alongside Captain America. But translating that same synergy to the screen appears unlikely, at least for now.

What do you think? Would you like to see Luke Cage or the rest of the Netflix lineup join the MCU on the big screen, or do you prefer the grittier, street-level storytelling of the shows? Sound off in the comments below.
