Anyone who knows me, knows that I’m not too shy about throwing in my vote to say that Nicolas Cage is one of the greatest actors of our generation.
Sure, he’s been somewhat of a joke over the years with the memes and viral videos but that doesn’t mean that the guy can’t act.
A lot of people tend to forget that Cage actually does have an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role (Leaving Las Vegas) and when he’s on – he’s on. Not many actors can carry a movie the way that Cage can and if you think I’m delusional, just watch any of the following films:
Leaving Las Vegas, The Rock, Con Air, Face/Off, Bringing Out The Dead, The Family Man Adaptation, Matchstick Men, Lord of War, The Weather Man, Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans or Joe. Even films like Vampire’s Kiss or Deadfall can be entertaining if you realize that he’s just purposely overacting.
That’s not to say that the guy hasn’t been awful in movies either or done a lot of very terrible movies.
It looks like his next film, Army of One, could actually be one of the good performances. It’s a comedy based on a true story and we’ll let this synopsis do the talking:
Gary Faulkner (Cage) is an ex-con, unemployed handyman, and modern day Don Quixote who receives a vision from God (Brand) telling him to capture Osama Bin Laden. Armed with only a single sword purchased from a home-shopping network, Gary travels to Pakistan to complete his mission. While on his quest, Gary encounters old friends back home in Colorado, the new friends he makes in Pakistan, the enemies he makes at the CIA – and even God and Osama themselves. Wendi McLendon-Covey, Rainn Wilson, and Paul Scheer also star in this hilarious tale of patriotism and one man’s quest for justice.”
