Over the years, The Simpsons has been known for it’s satire on the world of Celebrity, Current Affairs and perhaps most frequently – politics.
While they often take a reactionary stance to the news, they were well ahead of the game when it came to former real estate mogul Donald Trump becoming the Forty Fifth President of the United States of America, with the long running sitcom referencing it in an episode 16 years ago.
The reference came in the 2000 episode, Bart to the Future, which saw a possible future in which Lisa Simpson had taken office as the President. However one scene see’s the character discussing the budget crunch left by her predecessor, none other than Donald Trump.
You can check out the clip from the episode below:
Back in March, the episodes writer, Dan Greaney told The Hollywood Reporter:
“It was a warning to America. And that just seemed like the logical last stop before hitting bottom. It was pitched because it was consistent with the vision of America going insane. What we needed was for Lisa to have problems that were beyond her fixing, that everything went as bad as it possibly could, and that’s why we had Trump be president before her.”
Of course this all purely a coincidence, I don’t think we should start banging on the writers door, demanding his time machine until he accurately predicts John Cena correctly winning the Oscar for his portrayal of Joseph Stalin. What? You never know…
What do you think? Do you find it strange that they made this reference so long ago? Was President Trump inevitable? Let us know below!
