TOMB RAIDER Reboot: First Set Photos Revealed

    By Rory McNeillFebruary 6, 2017

Thus far, in the history of video game movie adaptations, none have found considerable success – but the studios aren’t ready to give up just yet. Tomb Raider is next up, with its second chance, after Angelina Jolie starred in two of the Warner Bros films in the early 2000s. Lara Croft will this time be played by Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina, The Man from U.N.C.L.E.).

The reboot began shooting recently, heading for a 2018 release and led by The Wave director Roar Uthaug. New cast members have since joined, but set photos have surfaced focusing on Vikander.

The Daily Mail has released the set photos from Tomb Raider, and all of them show Alicia Vikander very much looking the part. Thankfully, these photos show more than the typical walking-around-in-costume-eating-ice-cream snaps, and instead capture Vikander midway through some dangerous stunts. She’s seen climbing, running and falling, all on and from a rusty platform, and all whilst bound at the hands, with a clear leg injury.

    Check them out below:

More set photos will hopefully reveal the appearance of co-stars Dominic West as Mr. Croft, Daniel Wu as her sidekick and Walton Goggins as the villain. From the face of it though, Vikander’s look does seem like an accurate adaptation. With the plot set to show Croft’s quest to find her father, these set photos could be the start of that journey. If Vikander’s Lara Croft plays up to anything like these photos suggest, the story offers an ideal balance between drama and heart with a solid and engaging script, this could be the first video game adaptation to impress.
