At this point, Avatar 2 feels like an ancient myth of sorts, as James Cameron’s constant talk of its existence has led to nothing. With talks of Cameron working on Avatar 2, 3, 4, and 5, its an idea that is truly hard to believe considering the eight years since the original.
Well, it looks like we are a little bit closer to Avatar 2 actually happening. Confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, Sigourney Weaver recently let fans know when filming will finally begin.
“We’re starting! We’re starting training, and we’re starting — hmm, I probably can’t say anything. We will be actually shooting it by the fall.”
Weaver, whose involvement in these Avatar sequels is a little surprising for obvious reasons, also endorsed the material that she has read so far:
“I’m telling you, these scripts are so amazing, I’m not worried about [disappointing fans] at all. Am I worried about how we’re going to bring them to life? Yes, because they’re so ambitious. They’re so worth it. They’re well worth waiting for. I’m not worried about that at all. We’re trying to get it done as quickly as possible.”
Weaver’s endorsement at the end of the day may not mean much, but its still promising to hear. James Cameron in a lot of ways has become such a enigma, taking so much time between his films that one wonders what he’s really up to.
Personally though, its hard for me to dismiss these Avatar sequels. Cameron has proven time and time again to be one of the best blockbuster directors of all time, and showed with Avatar he can create a world that will blow audiences away. Considering how much technology has grown in eight years, the limitless potential he has is promising.
