If there’s anyone who is winning big in 2017, it’s Stephen King. His latest novel End of Watch enjoyed a long reign towards the top of the New York Times bestseller list, his older stories IT and The Dark Tower are receiving film adaptations, and the trailer for a SPIKE TV series based on his novella “The Mist” just dropped.
The trailer has convinced me that The Mist will, if nothing else, deliver on the hardcore creature violence that fans are looking for. In a mere one minute of footage, SPIKE TV has thrown together some of the nastiest images that you’re likely to see on television including several gouged out eyeballs and a bit with a drill that I don’t care to think about.
The question is whether this adaptation will be able to top the 2007 Frank Darabont adaptation. Despite some goofy CGI effects, The Mist is, for my money, one of the best horror films of the 21st century so far. Matching its tightly wound tension, terrific performances, and atmospheric dread is going to be tough to do.
Curious how this series will end. Obviously, the ending to the original is infamously shocking (and a far cry from Stephen King’s at least slightly hopeful ending to the novella) and only a few years away from “iconic” status. It will be interesting to see if the series takes things in a different direction.
