After years of waiting, The Mummy will be hitting theaters this Friday – and with it comes the all-new Dark Universe. The plan is to launch a franchise of gods and monsters, utilizing Universal’s vast library of creatures. Previously we’ve had a variety of different characters announced for this franchise: Frankenstein’s monster, The Bride of Frankenstein, The Wolfman, The Invisible Man and The Creature from the Black Lagoon, and even Van Helsing. But now it looks like we can also expect The Hunchback of Notre Dame, The Phantom of the Opera and Dracula.
The Mummy director Alex Kurtzman, who is currently the main creative mind behind the Dark Universe, listed the three new characters as some we can expect to come later in this franchise.
He also explained in his interview with Fandom that we can expect many more types of monsters to make appearances.
“There are characters within those films that can grow and expand and maybe even spin off. I think that digging into deep mythologies about monsters around the world is fair game for us, as well and connecting the monsters that we know to some surprising monsters could also be really interesting.”
It’s definitely going to be exciting seeing some of these classic monsters back in action, many of which started Universal’s horror craze. Let’s just hope they manage to retain some of the soul that made the classic movies so great.
The Mummy hits theaters June 9, 2017. The next film in the Dark Universe is Bride of Frankenstein, set for a February 14, 2019 release.
