Marvel Reveals New THOR – And It’s Not Who You’d Expect

    By James HaddenJune 22, 2017

The Marvel Universe has been a bit convoluted as of late, not only do we have multiple Spider-Men swinging around the New York skyline and two Captain Americas fighting the good fight (okay, one fighting the good fight and one the not so good) but now it looks as though we may have yet another Thor running around swinging his mighty weapon. The character first revealed in artwork a couple of months ago but it’s only now that their identity has been revealed.

For those of you who are unaware, the character was first teased at the end of the Jason Aaron and Olivier Coipel’s recent series, The Unworthy Thor. In that series, the now unworthy Thor of the main ‘616’ universe sought the Mjolnir of
the now defunct ‘Ultimate’ Universe. Despite coming close enough to the hammer that he can almost touch it, he chose not to wield it, believing somebody more worthy would come along.

The identity of this character, dubbed ‘The War Thor’ has been revealed in this weeks The Mighty Thor #20, with the revelation that it is the Odinson’s cheerful buddy, Volstagg. The issue saw Volstagg, who is now a senator being caught up in the recent War of Realms, something which leaves him as the only survivor out of a group refugee children displaced by the war. This leads to the character losing his joyous nature and eventually stumbling across the Ultimate Mjolnir, taking it for himself and becoming the new Thor.

It will be interesting to see how this change in the status quo, will affect the characters going forward. In the past, Volstagg has generally been a comic relief character, so it’s going to be a big change to his personality. We’ll hopefully find out as the story continues in The Mighty Thor #21 when it hits shelves next month.

What do you think? Do you like this twist? Is this who you expected to wield the hammer? Let us know below!
