Those who still have an uneasy taste of the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice‘s climax may just have their palates cleansed in time for this year. Warner Bros. has unveiled their next animated project being a faithful adaptation of the famed Superman story “The Death of Superman”.
TV Insider has recieved details regarding the casting of the historical comic adaptation. Returning for the fourth time as Superman in the animated films, Jerry O’Connell will be voicing the Man of Steel again. Also returning to their respective roles are Jason O’Mara as Batman (who has recently played The Patriot in rival comics Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD), Rosario Dawson as Wonder Woman, Nathan Fillion as the fan-favorite Green Lantern, Christopher Gorham as the Flash, Matt Lanter as Aquaman and Shemar Moore as Cyborg. Silas Stone will also be returning played again by Rocky Carroll.
As for newcomers, Lois Lane will be portrayed by Rebecca Romijn, who ironically happens to be O’Connell’s wife. Hank Henshaw, The Cyborg Superman, will be introduced played by Patrick Fabian of Better Call Saul. Rainn Wilson of The Office and House of 1000 Corpses is taking stage as Lex Luthor. This marks the second star from The Office to be put into an animated superhero film this year, with John Krasinski being recently announced as Peter Parker in Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse.
The synopsis is as follows:
“When a hulking monster emerges from an underground resting place and begins a mindless rampage, the Justice League is quickly called in to stop the colossal force of nature. But it soon becomes apparent that only Superman can stand against the monstrosity that has been nicknamed Doomsday. Battling their way throughout America, the two fight to a standstill as they reach the heart of Metropolis. Going punch for punch, Superman finally ends the threat of Doomsday as he throws one last punch and collapses forever.”
Interestingly enough, this marks the second time The Death of Superman has been adapted to an animated film. Back in 2007, Superman: Doomsday was a DC Animated Original that took the storyline from the original comics, while the new film will seemingly focus on a New 52 timeline like most of the movies since Justice League: War. Unlike Superman: Doomsday, the movie will be split into two parts with The Death of Superman aimed for the summertime while the second-half Reign of the Superman will be coming earlier next year. Sounds like they’re trying to fit everything in a good pace, much like two part films of The Dark Knight Returns.
The Death of Superman will release later this summer.
