Behind The Scenes Photo Of MCU’s Original Thanos Revealed

    By Vince HooverOctober 30, 2018
    Thanos MCU

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been cultivating over the last ten years, building to the Phase 3 finale that will certainly break all kinds of records, the still untitled Avengers 4. One of the biggest connecting strings throughout the shared universe is Thanos and the Infinity Stones. In Infinity War, we finally saw the Mad Titan in all his glory, but this wasn’t our first peek at the Big Bad of the MCU. All the way back in the first Avengers film, the post credits scene gave us a little tease of Thanos.

Now, thanks to the release of an old BTS photo on Instagram, we get a clearer look at the original take on Thanos.

Flashback to a day on set for The Avengers circa 2011. Jose was hired to design and sculpt this makeup to be applied to actor Damion Poitier, who portrayed Thanos in the post-credits scene. Although Thanos ended up getting a digital sheen for the film and eventually became fully digitally rendered in Avengers: Infinity War, Jose still has a soft spot for this practical makeup design. The appliances were painted and applied by Thom Floutz. #thanos #theavengers #specialfx #makeup #spfx #sculpt #marvel #marvelcomics #damionpoitier #infinitywar #fxmakeup #mcu #paramount #disney #superhero #stanlee #jackkirby #villian #ironheadstudio

As the scene was a mere seconds long, the makeup was pretty much all practical, and, before Josh Brolin was cast as the Seeker of the Infinity Stones, actor Damien Poitier suited up under the prosthetics to give us our first look at Thanos on the silver screen. Times, technology and looks have changed over the last decade, and now we have a fully realized Mad Titan to fear, loathe, and ultimately, to sympathize with as we does what he feels is right to save the universe from total annihilation, and bears the cross of that choice.

In the end, the final movie of Marvel’s Phase 3 comes as a bittersweet pill for fans, all overly excited to see the film, yet weary and sad over what characters may very well have their swan song as Marvel looks to the future.
