Batman Movie Begins Production In November – Likely Without Ben Affleck

At this point in time, what’s going on in regards to Batman in the DC Extended Universe is anyone’s guess. Last time we saw the character was in 2017’s Justice League, but as it stands, there has been no official confirmation on when we can next expect to see The Dark Knight return.

Last we heard was that War of The Planet of the Apes director, Matt Reeves, had turned in his script for his upcoming Batman solo film but other than that we don’t even have an official release date. However, a recent article has pointed to the troubled production as being put into production before the year is out – while also alluding to often rumored change of lead actor.

A recent article from The Hollywood Reporter discussing what we can expect in the coming has seemingly confirmed that we can expect to see production on Reeve’s film to begin in November of this year at the studio’s behest. The article also goes on to explain that it is likely that Ben Affleck, who has played the character in three movies now, won’t be starring in the movie – with a new actor being announced between now and November. The article states:

Aaron: When will we hear who will lead Matt Reeves’ The Batman? Presumably, it won’t be Ben Affleck.

Borys: The script is basically in, although Reeves will continue tweaking it and working on it. And I’m hearing the studio wants to start shooting in November. So let’s say between now and then?

Of course this should be taken with a heaping great bowl of salt since nothing has been confirmed as of yet. It does stack with previous reports that Reeves has completed the script for the film already and that he is looking to bring in a younger actor to take on the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman in the movie.

Whilst it is exciting to think that we may have a new Batman movie in the near future, I can’t help but be disappointed that we won’t be able to see Ben Affleck play the character to his full potential. His take on the character was definitely one of the more positively received aspects of the DCEU – with many praising him as the most comic accurate version seen on screen thus far.

Hopefully, we will be given some form of confirmation about what to expect from The Batman in the near future.
