The Marvel Cinematic Universe surprised fans when it was officially revealed that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield returned as their respective versions of Spider-Man for Spider-Man: No Way Home. Of course, the two actors had to deny their involvement all the way until the release of the film. As such, they’ve lost some credibility with fans, as everyone thinks they’re now lying at every turn. Actor Andrew Garfield acknowledges this, despite claiming that he currently has no plans to return as Spider-Man.
He revealed as much while speaking with Variety, noting that he’s now “the boy who cried wolf.” As such, Andrew Garfield understands it’ll be difficult to convince people that he really doesn’t have plans to return as Spider-Man.
Here’s what he specifically had to say about whether or not he has plans to return for any future Spider-Man projects:
“No plans, that’s the truth. I mean, everyone’s gonna call me a liar for the rest of my life. I am the boy who cried wolf now, that’s that.”
It’s worth noting that while he does say that’s the truth, he does make a good point – he did have to lie before to protect the secrets of Spider-Man: No Way Home. As such, if there were secrets regarding any future Amazing Spider-Man projects, he technically would have to lie about those too. As such, we’ll just have to keep waiting to see if Andrew Garfield ever does return to the role yet again. In the meantime, however, it was great to see him back as Peter Parker for Spider-Man: No Way Home. So at least fans will still have that appearance to be thankful for.
As for what we do know, it’s expected that Tom Holland will lead a new trilogy of Spider-Man films following the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
