Fans are already looking forward to James Gunn’s upcoming slate of DCU projects. Now one of them – Swamp Thing – could have one of Hollywood’s biggest directors attached. Specifically, it looks like James Mangold has entered talks to direct Swamp Thing.
It’s worth noting that James Mangold already directed Logan – which many fans consider to be the best X-Men film yet. Additionally, he directed the upcoming film Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. Now, as shared via THR, Swamp Thing could be one of his next projects.
It’s worth noting that these talks are still in the early stages. As such, James Gunn and Peter Safran didn’t mention James Mangold when announcing Swamp Thing. But things are still headed in that direction – especially with Mangold having tweeted the following image:

It’s worth noting that James Gunn himself already retweeted Mangold’s image as well. So, with that said, it seems likely that the deal will close in Mangold’s favor. If so, audiences should be in for a treat, given that Mangold is a massive fan of the character. Hopefully we’ll have more details on that front soon.
Though with Mangold also developing a Bob Dylan biopic, it could be quite a few years before Swamp Thing gets underway. In fact, Gunn’s new slate of DCU projects doesn’t start until 2025 when Superman: Legacy hits theaters. But this is still an exciting example for what kind of talent we could expect to see in the newly-established DCU.
The original appearance of Swamp Thing occurred in the 1971 comic book issue The House of Secrets #92. This was a stand-alone appearance but it was enough for the character to be reintroduced several times over the years. Most popularly in Alan Moore’s run with illustrations by John Totleben and Stephen R. Bissette. Eventually this led to the creation of comic book character John Constantine.
The further success of Swamp Thing led to two live-action film adaptations. These films were followed by two separate live-action television shows, with the most recent show having debuted in 2019 before being cancelled after its first season.
As such, fans are ready to see the comic book character back on the screen. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional news as we have it.
