It was previously reported last year that Lionsgate planned to reboot the Blair Witch franchise yet again. Now it looks like director Oliver Park is reportedly attached to direct the new Blair Witch film.
As shared via Production Weekly, Oliver Park has signed on with Lionsgate for their upcoming project “Untitled Blair Witch Sequel.” It’s also been said that Lionsgate is aiming to shoot the film in either the late summer or fall of this year. This means the film will likely be released sometime in 2024.
The listing also adds that Haxan Films is attached to the project. This is the team behind the original The Blair Witch Project. And, while there’s no official confirmation on that front, it does include Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez as producers. They both wrote and directed the original film. As such, if they return for this new project, it’ll be exciting given how little involvement they had with Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 and Adam Wingard’s Blair Witch.
Fans will know alleged Blair Witch reboot director Oliver Park from his works that include The Offering, Strange Events, and A Night of Horror: Nightmare Radio. Hopefully we’ll have more official details soon and what exactly Park plans to do with the Blair Witch canon. It’s a franchise with plenty of possibilities – so let’s hope they take advantage of the iconic brand this time around.
The original film, The Blair Witch Project, was released in 1999. The first sequel, Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2, followed soon after in 2000 from director Joe Berlinger. The film was panned for both studio interference and departing from the formula of the original movie. Adam Wingard directed a more conventional sequel, titled Blair Witch, in 2016 which received mixed reactions from fans.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Blair Witch updates as we have them. For now, it looks like we’ll have more news close to when the film allegedly shoots later this year.
