Aquaman fans around the world are eagerly anticipating the release of the highly anticipated sequel, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. But amidst all the excitement, there have been rumors swirling about the Jason Momoa’s future involvement in James Gunn’s DCU. Now, with Aquaman 2 likely concluding his run as Aquaman, Momoa has the opportunity to dive into a new DC character.
A recent report from Variety shed some light on the behind-the-scenes developments in the DCU, particularly the efforts of James Gunn and producer Peter Safran to revamp DC’s movie slate. While Momoa’s time as Aquaman appears to be done, it seems that he has caught the attention of Gunn and Safran for the role of Lobo.
The report states:
Momoa may return, just not as Aquaman. Sources say the actor has engaged in talks to play Lobo, either in the 2025 reboot “Superman: Legacy,” written and directed by Gunn, or in a standalone film.
This shouldn’t exactly surprise fans as it was reported last year that Jason Momoa could exit the role of Aquaman to play Lobo in the DCU.
Jason Momoa‘s interest in playing Lobo dates back several years. Even before it was officially announced that he would be portraying Aquaman, Momoa expressed his admiration for Lobo during the Evolution Expo in 2014. He named the interstellar bounty hunter as one of his personal favorite comic book characters. However, his role as Aquaman took precedence at the time, putting any potential Lobo plans on hold.
Lobo, a fan-favorite character, is known for his over-the-top personality, superhuman strength, and regenerative abilities. James Gunn has been teasing Lobo’s arrival in the DCU since joining DC Studios, and Momoa’s involvement in talks for the character has only fueled the speculation. It appears that Momoa’s dream of portraying Lobo may finally be coming true.
While Lobo has yet to star in his own standalone project, there have been previous attempts at bringing the character to life. Unfortunately, these projects faced various obstacles and never came to fruition. One notable effort was a Lobo-centric spin-off series tied to the show Krypton. The spin-off was set to focus on Lobo, with actor Emmett J. Scanlan reprising the role. However, the cancellation of Krypton ultimately led to the demise of the spin-off.
While Momoa’s potential transition from Aquaman to Lobo may raise questions about the future of the Aquaman franchise, it is important to remember that these are just rumors at this stage. Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set to be released on December 20, 2023, and fans can expect another thrilling underwater adventure with Momoa’s portrayal of the titular hero.
