Sony has received their fair share of backlash as they continue their efforts to rival the likes of Marvel. Though the two studios have worked together in recent years, creating hit films like Spider-Man: Homecoming and its sequels, Sony has still been determined to forge their own franchises. Now they’re being blasted by fans on social media for a promo video made to accompany their upcoming film Madame Web.
The upcoming live-action film, centered around the Spider-Man character of the same name, will feature a variety of Spider-Women. These characters include Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter, Isabela Merced as Spider-Girl, and Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin. The characters were all featured in a new promo video which features glimpses from the film featured behind the film’s title: “Madame Web.”
At one point in the promo video, however, a character jumps through one of the letters. As they land, however, a perfectly-timed explosion appears. It’s this digitally-added graphic that has fans laughing. As you can see below, one user clipped the aforementioned moment by itself, and it’s already become something of a meme.
Many users are surprised to see that it is, in fact, an unaltered clip from the original Madame Web promo. Others have made comparisons to “a fourth grade iMovie project.” For a Spider-Man spin-off film that has to operate without the iconic webslinger in sight, it’s certainly not off to a good start.
Here are some of the responses fans have left to the Madame Web promo via X:

I’ll be honestly impressed if this is worse than Morbius. Feels like a strong possibility at this point.

this looks like a 2011 youtube intro.
You know the one, where it’s a concrete wall, and a gun shoots at the wall revealing the channel name?— HUMBUCKER (@HumbuckerVT) January 8, 2024
As mentioned, Sony has struggled to keep up with the likes of the MCU. Their most successful spin-off ventures so far have been the Venom films. Otherwise, with flops like Morbius, it remains to be seen if they’ll ever succeed in the way that Marvel Studios has with their characters.
The film is currently slated to hit theaters on February 14, 2024. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional Madame Web updates as we have them.
