A new wave of continuations and reboots are on the way. Now that we’re growing more distant from films released in the 2000s and 2010s, it’s quite exciting to see which titles from that era are being picked for new continuations. Now a popular hit movie from 2010 is getting a prequel nearly 15 years later.
As the project will be a prequel, the original movie’s star will be replaced. Fortunately, it looks like the new story – which will actually be a television series – already has a promising actor to tackle the lead role.
Denzel Washington played the lead role in the original film, but as shared by Deadline, John Boyega is set to take his place.
Here’s what the new report shared about the project which takes place three decades prior to the film it’s based on, The Book of Eli:
“John Boyega is set to headline and executive produce The Book of Eli, a TV series prequel to the 2010 post-apocalyptic action film that starred Denzel Washington in the title role, Deadline has learned.”
Deadline adds:
“Boyega will play younger version of Washington’s Eli in the project, which hails from the movie’s writer, Gary Whitta, creator/writer/executive producer of the potential series, and its directors, the Hughes brothers, who executive produce.”
The series is also set to be produced by Alcon Entertainment, while it’s currently going to be shopped around to premium buyers. There aren’t many details available regarding the show’s storyline, though it’s reportedly going to take place near the start of the nuclear war which took place 30 years before The Book of Eli.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding this prequel series set before The Book of Eli as we have them. The movie has become quite popular over the years, and there’s certainly plenty of potential in a prequel. The original movie earned $157 million on an $80 million budget.
