The Netflix series Wednesday has gone on to become the biggest English-language series for the platform. Obviously it’s a major property for Netflix and it’s a priority that we’ll be getting a second season with reports of multiple spin-offs in the works. Nevertheless, a new report claims that Wednesday could also have a dark future ahead.
After all, many Netflix properties have suffered such fates. If not by premature cancellation, then with the controversies that come with major recasts like Henry Cavill being replaced by Liam Hemsworth in The Witcher. A new rumor suggests something similar for Wednesday.
As fans know, star Jenna Ortega is slated to return for Wednesday Season 2. The next season of the highly-anticipated series is already set to enter production. However, Insider Matt Belloni offers a pessimistic prediction regarding Ortega for the show’s future.
“I have a prediction on ‘Wednesday,'” the insider begins. “I do not believe that Jenna Ortega will be on the show beyond the second season.”
His guest on the episode, Bloomberg’s Lucas Shaw, calls it “a safe prediction.” The conversation began after Belloni called comments made by Ortega following the first season of Wednesday the “media fumble of the year.”
“In an interview on the Dax Shepard podcast, she basically said that the scripts were not good for ‘Wednesday,'” Matt Beloni recalled. “Keep in mind, this is the most successful [English-language] show in the history of Netflix. She said that she had to come up with the famous TikTok dance scene. It was gonna be a flash mob, but she vetoed it, and she said, ‘I don’t think I’ve ever had to put my foot down on a set the way I had to on Wednesday.’ Not great when your lead actress is sh***ing all over your very successful TV show.”
Obviously it’s too early to predict if Netflix would, for any reason, recast Jenna Ortega‘s role as the titular character. But they’ve certainly proven it possible with television shows including The Witcher. As such, we’ll have to see what the future holds for Wednesday and its place at Netflix. Hopefully the second season has a smooth production and rectifies the issues that Ortega mentions occurred with the first season.
