In addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there have been numerous other Marvel adaptations with varying degrees of success. Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy, for example, is fondly remembered – with the first two entries often considered some of the greatest comic book movies ever made. Surprisingly, however, it looks like a badly reviewed Marvel movie is the latest to reach the Top 10 category on Hulu.
Interestingly, while Hulu is owned by Disney, this particular title isn’t one of their movies. Quite a few studios have had their hands in different Marvel properties, and this was one that predated the MCU. Furthermore, this trending film on Hulu is actually the second of two adaptations in a live-action film series led by one of Hollywood’s hardest working actors.
As such, it can be surprising to know that these films haven’t had the success that their MCU counterparts have experienced. At the time of their respective releases, however, comic book movies were just beginning to find their footing in the modern entertainment landscape.
The films are none other than Ghost Rider and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, both of which starred Nicolas Cage. It’s the second film of the two, however, that has broken into the Hulu Top 10 as of this writing. Viewers for one reason or another are flocking to Spirit of Vengeance, making it one of the most popular titles on the service.
The sequel is quite interesting because it only earned $132 million on a $75 million budget, making it a flop. And, as mentioned, it received rather negative reviews as well. Some fans prefer the film to its predecessor, however, preferring its offbeat tone and the even more eccentric performance delivered by Nicolas Cage. Now, years later, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance is a badly reviewed Marvel movie that’s somehow made it towards the top of Hulu.
