The Marvel Cinematic Universe has its Daredevil again. The aforementioned character, who returned to the MCU for cameos in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk, finally has their own series once more. Titled Daredevil: Born Again, Marvel Studios went to some major lengths to make sure the Charlie Cox led series didn’t lose its edge moving to Disney Plus with the unexpected death of a major character.
The premiere of Daredevil: Born Again is quite ballsy for this reason. The new premiere of the series kills off a returning character and fan-favorite from the original Daredevil series. Now that fans are starting to learn about the tragic death of this particular character, however, Daredevil actor Charlie Cox has finally decided to comment on the matter.
As shared in an interview with ComicBook, Cox reacted by emphasizing how tragic this death makes him feel. While he couldn’t fathom what actually happens in the series premiere, it’s something he felt was necessary to give Daredevil: Born Again a new edge and set his character into an all-new headspace.
“It’s gutting,” Cox began. “It’s a tough pill to swallow. There’s no getting away from it. There’s no other way to say it: I could have never imagined a world where something like that happens.”
However, Cox explains that it was necessary after returning to the world of Daredevil following such a long hiatus:
“We’re coming back after six years,” Cox adds. “We’re making another Daredevil TV show, and we want to come in hot and shake things up and be bold, and brave, and put Matt in an emotional state that he’s never been in before.”
Furthermore, not only does it offer an edge for viewers, it offers the story a necessary catalyst to push the narrative forward.
“What [Foggy’s death] lends to the story going forward, it’s the catalyst of tremendous and really great drama and storytelling.”
Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson was a great part of the original Daredevil series. As such, fans really felt the emotional punch that came with his death in the premiere. In that way, however, they can now relate to Cox’s Daredevil and the feelings of vengeance that he now possesses in the beginning of this new story arc.
