Actor Robert De Niro’s career first began in a distant era of Hollywood history, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t afraid to comment on current events and politics. For starters, Robert De Niro released a statement regarding his transgender daughter Airyn De Niro, who recently announced their transition.
In a statement Robert De Niro revealed with in a new report, he quickly took the time to emphasize how much “love and support” he has for his transgender daughter, and furthermore that he doesn’t think it needs to be a “big deal” that they’ve transitioned.
Here’s what De Niro specifically shared with Variety:
“I loved and supported Aaron as my son, and now I love and support Airyn as my daughter. I don’t know what the big deal is,” De Niro stated. “I love all my children.”
Airyn De Niro discussed their transition with Them, where they shared a lengthy story about becoming a transgender woman at 29-years-old. Notably, they had this to say:
“There’s a difference between being visible and being seen. I’ve been visible. I don’t think I’ve been seen yet.”
De Niro also emphasized that they don’t feel like they should be called a “nepo baby” and that her parents were supportive of her decision to keep a low profile growing up:
“Obviously no parent is perfect, but I am grateful that both my parents agreed to keep me out of the limelight. They wanted it very private,” she shared. “They have told me they wanted me to have as much of a normal childhood as possible.”
This discussion was part of De Niro’s way of discussing their transition on their own terms, after the Paparazzi had leaked images of De Niro’s new wardrobe choices and femme appearance without consulting her.
