The Marvel Cinematic Universe is gradually steering towards a new X-Men adaptation. Marvel Studios has been having fun with their acquisition of the property via Disney’s buyout of 20th Century Fox, and after cameos in films like The Marvels and the more direct Deadpool & Wolverine, we’re finally headed towards some bigger X-Men appearances. Now a director for the studio’s X-Men reboot might’ve finally been chosen.

The MCU’s X-Men movie certainly has a lot of pressure going for it. After all, it’s intended to introduce a new era for the X-Men property, one that can continue to expand with new projects like other MCU franchises. Marvel Studios has an interesting director allegedly in mind to tackle this job, however, and he’s already taken on one of the studio’s other more ambitious projects.

According to Deadline, the studio has entered “early talks” with this potential director. While they couldn’t reveal much about these conversations, they were able to share the following:

“Following the successful launch of Thunderbolts*, director Jake Schreier might already have his sights set on the next big Marvel Studios project, as sources tell Deadline he is in early talks to direct the studio’s new X-Men movie.”

Schreier is said to be at the top of the studio’s list for directors following a recent meeting. Along with the success of Thunderbolts, however, that’s not much of a surprise. The studio already has a writer attached to pen the script – Michael Lesslie – while Kevin Feige will produce the project.

Hopefully we’ll have more details regarding this potential deal and more about the X-Men reboot in the near future. Several characters from Fox’s efforts are expected to appear in Avengers: Doomsday, and many fans expect that Avengers: Secret Wars will further pave the way for the MCU’s own X-Men team. Of course, what this new roster looks like remains to be seen.

Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more X-Men news and any other MCU updates as we have them. In the meantime, fans will be able to see the return of Fox’s X-Men next year in Avengers: Doomsday.
