Netflix had major plans to launch a big-budget film franchise that could rival the likes of Star Wars. The series even had a visionary director attached to bring the story to life. However, with the release of only two films, it looks like Netflix is now canceling their plans to make any other movies in this fan-favorite franchise.
While the films do have dedicated fans, it looks like the fanbase just isn’t big enough, as Netflix is reportedly uninterested in making any additional sequels.
With hopes that it could have been their own Star Wars, they must’ve been banking on a bigger widespread commercial appeal, and they seemingly just haven’t reached it.
This was shared by Kurt Johnstad, a co-writer for the two existing films, who revealed they outlined the plots for an additional four movies. Sadly, however, it looks like those plans won’t becoming to fruition. Here’s what Johnstad shared via the MINUTEMEN podcast:
“We outlined movies 3, 4, 5, and 6… very detailed outlines,” Johnstad revealed, referring to potential additional films in the Rebel Moon franchise. While they had plans for a total of six films, however, he continues to explain that the Rebel Moon series seems to be dead with only two releases.
“Zack has literally plotted out the whole world. We know where we can go… we’ve written… detailed outlines…The second movie was to find the princess. And the third movie is to make sure that the princess is where she should be — sitting on the throne and properly ruling… over the Mother World.”
“With some luck and an act of God, we’ll get to go back to that world.”
While there might be some life left in the franchise, he does emphasize that it would take “an act of God” to make more movies, so it seems likely that Netflix has absolutely no interest at this time. However, fans will no doubt keep hope alive for a Rebel Moon comeback. After all, Zack Snyder fans have proven their dedication with other infamous Snyder projects.
