Fans have struggled to enjoy new shows on streaming platforms like Netflix due to the possibility of seeing these shows canceled. Sadly, it’s a competitive industry, and platforms are often making tough decisions regarding their catalogue. Now one such fan-favorite series has been canceled by Netflix following the release of only one season.

It’s certainly not a surprising move for Netflix, who has often axed beloved shows even with a mere one or two seasons under their belt. For this particular series, however, it was beginning to receive a rather positive reception from viewers and critics. It seems as though its complicated production signaled its inevitable cancellation instead.

The series was released in March and soon found itself as the #2 show on Netflix with its premiere. After remaining in the platform’s Top 10 category for several additional weeks, it seemed as though the series would certainly receive an additional season to continue its story.

However, for the series which was titled The Residence, things were dependent on much more than ratings. For starters, the series used a pricy replica of the White House and production took place in California, which led to high costs and things were complicated during the 2023 Hollywood labor disputes. One of the show’s cast members, Andre Braugher, even passed away during his work on the series and he had to be replaced with Giancarlo Esposito.

When weighing costs, the limitations of the show’s story which lent itself to an anthology concept for future seasons, and other such complications, Netflix seems to have decided that one season really was enough for the series. Whether or not fans agree, however, remains to be seen.

Fans can still watch the sole season of The Residence via Netflix. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the streaming platform as we have them. For now, however, it looks like fans will have to accept yet another unwanted cancellation – especially when considering how many subscribers were beginning to praise The Residence.
