One of the most anticipated sequel projects in Hollywood is the follow-up to Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ. Gibson is set to return as director for the sequel to his 2004 biblical epic which became the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time for decades at the domestic box office until the release of Deadpool & Wolverine.

Fans have been hearing plenty of chatter regarding the film’s sequel, which was dubbed The Resurrection of the Christ, and details have been mixed regarding production start dates and release dates. Now we have a clearer idea regarding this timetable and when fans will be able to see not just one but two follow-ups to The Passion of the Christ.

As shared below, Variety has confirmed that the two new films, titled The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One and The Resurrection of the Christ: Part Two, will both be released in 2027:

“‘The Resurrection of the Christ Part One‘ is slated for Good Friday, March 26, while ‘Part Two‘ is set for 40 days later on Ascension Day, May 6. Lionsgate will release the films in theaters.”

It’s become a popular trend in recent years for a blockbuster-sized sequel to be split into more than one film – as we’ll now seeing with the plans to continue The Passion of the Christ. While it certainly wasn’t expected for Mel Gibson’s follow-up to The Passion of the Christ, it does suggest that fans will get a rather extensive moviegoing experience for this long-awaited continuation. This lines up with Gibson’s previous statements regarding how risky and ambitious the film is intended to be.

Many details regarding the projects are still being kept under wraps, and now that there are two films on the way, it’s likely that the secrecy will continue. Fortunately, with the short gap between releases, fans won’t have long to wait after the first sequel’s release to see the second. This should make some of the wait easier for those interested.

Jim Caviezel is said to return as Jesus in the film. Randall Wallace and Gibson are both penning the follow-ups, and so we’ll have to wait and see what other details will come our way moving towards the productions of both sequels, courtesy of Lionsgate.
