As with other streaming platforms or traditional television networks, Amazon Prime Video must make tough business decisions. Therefore it’s just been revealed that Amazon Prime made a tough decision to cancel one of their series after releasing only one season on their platform.

This disappointing news, made even more so by the revelation that it’s the last project for one of its stars – Norman Lear – was confirmed by its co-creator and several stars. As revealed in a new report, co-creator Dan Ewen shared the news with Laverne Cox and George Wallace.

The exact reasons for the cancellation of the show are unclear, but it’s likely the motivations to do so were the same that come into play for so many other streaming shows that have been canceled in recent years.

Here’s what was stated to Deadline regarding the Amazon Prime series being prematurely axed with only one season under its belt:

“A seven-year effort was gone in a puff of server exhaust,” they wrote in a guest column regarding their Amazon Prime series Clean Slate.

The guest column featured plenty of emotion regarding the cancellation of the series, with references to the decline of original IPs and shade thrown at our modern-day streaming landscape.

“Of course, we mourn our baby. We mourn for the jobs that disappear with this news. We mourn the continued demise of non-IP creations,” they stated in the column. Though they add:

“We will push to keep the story alive, for the sake of the kind of people portrayed in it, the kind of people being legislated out of existence, or erased from history books.”

It’s certainly a difficult time indeed for original programs to get off the ground. While it’s unclear what future there could be for Clean Slate, if any, one can hope that the industry improves for creators.

Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more news regarding Amazon Prime Video and other streaming service updates as we have them. It’s disappointing to see Clean Slate canceled with just one season, especially when fans were just beginning to enjoy the series, but hopefully there will be other projects from its creators in the near future.
