Well, the new Power Rangers trailer has landed and it seems as if we’ve got a Chronicle copy on our hands – that is, according to Max Landis. The ‘grim’ and ‘dark’ aesthetic isn’t exactly the first thing that comes to mind when you think of the Power Rangers (however after the Adi Shankar produced Power/Rangers short that took the internet by storm, it seems as if Hollywood has other ideas).
As you can see from the trailer, we’re introduced to some angsty teenagers who have all sorts of relationship problems. One character even decides to cut her hair in protest before swaggering downstairs like a complete and utter rebel. Yeah, you tell them girl!
Anyway, it has been long rumored that Max Landis, writer of Chronicle and American Ultra, was attached to pen the latest reboot however after the first trailer arrived yesterday he soon put those rumors to bed via twitter.
I wrote a silly, fun, goofy retro teen action adventure movie. They fired me, and five or so writers later, it appears they made Chronicle.”
It remains to be seen as to why he was fired but one could probably guess that it may have been due to the tone that Landis was going for. Personally, I think Landis was on the right track with the tonal direction however Hollywood has once again decided to try and recreate a franchise in a ‘new’ way. Will this be as successful as Chronicle (it won like five Oscars didn’t it)? Or will it be another Fantastic Four bomb? I suppose we’ll all find out on March 24th, 2017.
Did you enjoy the trailer? Will you be going to see this at the cinemas? Or are you fed up of all the reboots? Sound off down below!
