Marvel Studios has officially released the first trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, giving fans an exciting glimpse at the next chapter in the cosmic adventures of Star-Lord and his ragtag team of misfits.
The sequel brings back the core cast from the original film, including Chris Pratt as Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Dave Bautista as Drax, and the voices of Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel as Rocket and Baby Groot. The trailer teases the return of the group’s trademark humor and offbeat action, while also introducing new characters and hints at deeper emotional stakes.
Set to the soundtrack of another Awesome Mix, the trailer opens with a look at the team in action and closes with an instantly viral moment featuring Baby Groot — smaller, but clearly just as wild.
Director James Gunn returns to helm the sequel, which is expected to delve deeper into Peter Quill’s mysterious parentage. Fans also get a first look at Pom Klementieff as Mantis, a new character with empathic abilities, and brief glimpses of returning characters Yondu (Michael Rooker) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), who appear to be more closely aligned with the Guardians this time around.
Marvel has kept many plot details under wraps, but the tone of the trailer is consistent with the original film’s blend of sci-fi spectacle, humor, and heart. The chemistry between characters — and the dynamic between Rocket and Baby Groot in particular — already has fans buzzing.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set to hit theaters on May 5, 2017, and will continue building toward the events of Avengers: Infinity War.
