In quite possibly the best news that MCU fans will hear for a while, it looks like Sony and Marvel Studios have made up – and made a deal to produce the currently untitled third Spider-Man film with Tom Holland! It had looked like nothing would happen between the two studios, but that’s not the case, as a deal has been made.
The report comes from Variety, who writes:
On Friday, the two companies jointly announced that Marvel Studios and its president, Kevin Feige, will produce the third film in the “Spider-Man: Homecoming” series. It will once again feature Tom Holland reprising his role as the title character. The rumor mill roared back to life this week with hints that the two companies were close to brokering a new agreement.
Over the summer, news broke that the Disney, Marvel’s parent company, and Sony had reached an impasse over a new financing deal. Disney wanted the film to be financed on a 50/50 basis with Marvel Studios chief Feige remaining in a consulting producer capacity. Sony is believed to have proposed keeping the arrangement under the current terms, which stipulate that Marvel receives about 5% of first-dollar gross and all merchandising revenues.
Kevin Feige said in a statement:
“I am thrilled that Spidey’s journey in the MCU will continue, and I and all of us at Marvel Studios are very excited that we get to keep working on it. Spider-Man is a powerful icon and hero whose story crosses all ages and audiences around the globe. He also happens to be the only hero with the superpower to cross cinematic universes, so as Sony continues to develop their own Spidey-verse you never know what surprises the future might hold.”
Amy Pascal said:
“This is terrific. Peter Parker’s story took a dramatic turn in ‘Far From Home’ and I could not be happier we will all be working together as we see where his journey goes.”
The untitled Spider-Man movie will hit theaters on July 16th, 2021.
It’s welcome news, considering that the door on a potential deal was said to be closed earlier this month. Sony doesn’t have any intentions of stopping the development of their Spider-Man movie universe, though, as they just announced a Madame Web movie yesterday. We’ll keep you posted on anything that happens.
