The Internet has once again been put into an uproar, this time over the children’s television series Muppet Babies. The series for children aged 4 to 7, which airs via Disney Junior, released a new episode which has been found by conservatives on social media to be controversial. In the episode, one of the male characters from the Muppets franchise – Gonzo – made the decision to become a “princess.” This Muppet Babies episode includes Gonzo wearing a dress as he becomes Gonzorella, a play on the name Cinderella.
Specifically, the episode first suggests that the male characters attending the “royal ball” must wear knight costumes. With Gonzo disappointed, a “fairy ratfather” turns him into a “princess,” much in the way that Cinderella’s fairy godmother grants her wish. The episode continues to draw parallels with the classic story, and at a certain point Miss Piggy tells Gonzo that they “met the most amazing princess!”
Similar to Cinderella, the group is unaware of Gonzorella’s true identity. They only know that “they ran away” and left behind a glass slipper. With this, Gonzo admits the truth:
“Everyone,” Gonzo states, “there’s something I need to tell you. The princess who came to your ball tonight was me.” Now wearing the dress, Gonzo plainly states: “I’m Gonzorella.”
Now that the group decided it was okay for Gonzo to have not worn a knight costume after all, they apologize. Miss Piggy makes the following statement:
“Oh Gonzo, we’re sorry, it wasn’t very nice of us to tell you what to wear to our ball.”
Furthermore, a different character in the Disney show notes:
“You’re our friend and we love you any way you are.”
The revelation has sparked quite a few upset comments on social media, one viral example of which came from commentator Candace Owens. She made the following statement on Twitter:
“I can’t believe I’m tweeting this but.. they are pushing the trans agenda on children via muppet babies. This is sick and PERVERTED. Everyone should be disturbed by predatory cartoons meant to usher children into gender dysphoria. Bring back manly muppets, anyone?”

However, there were a wide variety of positive responses to the episode, especially from transgender rights activists. Supporters of the Muppet Babies episode and its use of Gonzo had this to say:

There was a Rugrats episode in the '90s that was about Chuckie and Phil wearing dresses and venting their frustrations with not being able to wear them and no one got mad at that like they are with the Muppet Babies! Cancel culture! People are so sensitive these days, amiright?? pic.twitter.com/bfnCKxwhgu
