It’s been nearly thirty years since Kevin Smith launched his filmmaking career with Clerks. The film has gone on to become an iconic example of independent film, and even helped create one of the bigger cinematic universes before the MCU. Now Kevin Smith will be returning to that beloved world with Clerks 3. What’s more, the first look for Clerks 3 has also been released.
The image reveals the main cast of the film, all of which are recreating their famous pose from Clerks 2. It’s an interesting way to both compare and contrast the two films, especially given the ages of the cast involved.
As revealed via Vanity Fair:
Appropriately, age will actually play a large role in the film’s plot – something that Kevin Smith owes to his own increasing age. As Kevin Smith himself explained:
“The film is predicated on the idea that Randal survives a heart attack, a massive heart attack, quite like I did, and then winds up, you know, deciding that he’s wasted his life,” Smith stated. “But before he dies he wants to memorialize himself. He wants to make a movie. So our boys essentially wind up making Clerks.”
The highly anticipated sequel, Clerks 3, is currently being filmed at the original film’s shooting locations in Leonardo, New Jersey. The film will feature scenes both in color and in black and white. Kevin Smith further explained that this film is for the fans that grew old with the original film since it was first released.
“I know we’ve got fans who age with us…and it’s going to hit in a lot of personal places. I don’t think the 20-somethings are going to be like, ‘He’s still the voice of a generation!’ They’re going to be like, ‘Well, he’s the voice of middle age, if anything, at this point.’ I hope young people will find something to enjoy about it, but it’s definitely a movie about people who try to be young while being old.”
He further elaborated:
All of us are in our late 40s, if not 50s…and you’ll see the progression,” Smith says. “We don’t hide the age. We don’t Hollywood it up. We all look as old as we look. Um, except…” Smith jokes, hinting at Rosario Dawson. “Yeah, she never ages, man. She’s preserved in amber.”
Kevin Smith suffered a life-threatening heart attack just a few years ago, and the experience will have a massive impact on Clerks 3. Just as the original film mirrored Kevin Smith working at a convenience store as a young adult, this new film will also mirror his life. This time, however, Randal will be the focus – after he suffers a heart attack much like Kevin Smith – and then decides it’s his turn to make a movie. As a result, Clerks 3 will follow Randal and Dante as they make a movie based on their lives at the Quick Stop.
Hopefully we’ll have more news on the sequel soon as filming continues. In the mean time, this first look at Clerks 3 promises an exciting continuation for the story and characters that we’ve all come to love over the decades.
