Although Spider-Man: No Way Home was the final installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s initial Spider-Man trilogy, it’s far from the last Spider-Man film they’ll be doing. In fact, it’s been revealed since its release that multiple new Spider-Man films are currently in development, beginning with the tentatively titled Spider-Man 4. While some fans have suspected that the film is already pre-planned with the storyline laid out, it seems that isn’t the case. In fact, star Tom Holland has revealed that Spider-Man 4 is only now being discussed.
This was revealed in an interview with EW, where Tom Holland explained that they’re still determining the best course of action for the franchise. This implies that there is no script or story set in stone, and that Marvel will have to figure out not just what the next film will be – but the other two past it as well.
Here’s what Tom Holland specifically had to say about Spider-Man 4:
“We’ve had conversations about the potential future of Spider-Man, but at the moment they are conversations. We don’t know what the future looks like.”
With that statement in mind, we’ll probably have some time to wait before another Spider-Man film gets underway. Spider-Man: No Way Home had a massive impact on the MCU and the Spider-Man brand, which really means anything is possible going forward. As such, it’ll be interesting to see what type of stories Marvel and Sony decide on that will work best for their many characters. It’s going to be tricky, but with the critical acclaim and fan support that Spider-Man: No Way Home has earned, they’ll probably manage to figure something out. Though, it is worth noting that Tom Holland isn’t even under contract at the moment – so they really are starting this new trilogy from the ground up.
Meanwhile, fans can still see Tom Holland return along with other familiar faces in Spider-Man: No Way Home which is currently playing in theaters.
