The 2008 horror film The Strangers, directed by Bryan Bertino, was quite a hit with horror fans when it was first released. The movie hit at a time when the slasher genre was decreasing in popularity compared to other subgenres. Despite this, however, its trio of killers instantly struck a chord with audiences. It didn’t need a body count to transform them into modern-day icons. Unfortunately, it took another decade before a sequel would ever get underway. This particular film, titled The Strangers: Prey at Night, took a much more traditional route with the titular characters. They became the kind of villains that 1980’s slasher films are more well-known for. And, as it turns out, it might not be the last we see of them yet.
Producer Roy Lee has now teased three new sequels to The Strangers and The Strangers: Prey at Night are in development.
You’ve read that right. After the first sequel took nearly a decade to get off the ground, it appears we’ll now be getting three new Strangers sequels. However, details regarding these upcoming films are still unannounced. As such, it’s unclear what exactly the plan with these new films is. But fans that are hoping for more Strangers content are sure to be pleased. Producer Roy Lee revealed as much while speaking to The Boo Crew Podcast via Bloody-Disgusting.
Here’s what he had to say regarding the exciting horror news:
“I think the next three are in production next month with another filmmaker that people will know.”
We’ve certainly seen these types of announcements more often than not in recent years. Although the 2018 Halloween film was initially a stand-alone project, two sequels were quickly greenlit that made it into a trilogy. It wasn’t long after those films were announced that we got the Fear Street trilogy, a series of horror films inspired by the R.L. Stine books of the same name. After that, a new Jeepers Creepers trilogy was announced beginning with Jeepers Creepers: Reborn and so too was a new trilogy of Exorcist sequels. Now The Strangers is the latest to get the treatment.
Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more updates as we have them. If the films are supposed to begin production next month, we should be having more news sooner rather than later.
