Fans of The Last of Us were surprised with the third episode of the hit series. Specifically, The Last of Us took a slight detour when, rather than focus on characters Ellie and Joel, the show focused on a gay love story instead.

The two characters of the episode were played by Nick Offerman and Murray Bartlett. Now, as shared via Inverse, gay director Peter Hoar explained how The Last of Us viewers had to be tricked into watching such a story.

Here’s what he had to say:

“Sometimes you have to sort of trick the rest of the world into watching these things before they’re like, ‘Oh, my God, it was two guys. I just realized,’” he said. “I think then they might understand that it’s all real. It’s just the same love.”

Fans have certainly celebrated the story’s inclusion in the series. Despite some users deciding to review bomb the series – both critics and viewers have mostly praised the unique story of the third episode. As such, some fans might be wondering whether or not Peter Hoar might return to direct an episode for the second season of the series. Here’s what he had to say about that:

“I would love to do it again if my schedule allows. I don’t know when they’re going to start, maybe it’s tomorrow. But it’s a big show, I shot this episode in September ‘21. And here we are in nearly February ‘23 talking about it. It’s a massive undertaking. They’ve got to go write it first.”

As such, we’ll have to see what happens in the future. For now, however, fans will have to stick with the first season of the series and see where it goes from here.

The Last of Us was developed by Craig Mazin who worked alongside Neil Druckmann to write and executive produce. Kantemir Balagov directed the pilot episode with Jasmila Žbanić and Ali Abbasi having directed additional episodes.

The cast of The Last of Us includes Pedro Pascal, Bella Ramsey, Troy Baker, and Ashley Johnson, as well as Gabriel Luna, Merle Dandridge, Nico Parker, Murray Bartlett, Nick Offerman, Jeffrey Pierce and Anna Torv.

Fans can currently stream The Last of Us via HBO Max. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates regarding the fan-favorite series as we have them.
