A new Alien film is on the way from 20th Century Studios. The project has been described as stand-alone, with no direct connections to the most recent entries like Prometheus and Alien: Covenant, or the classic original. Rather, this Alien film will be a fresh take from Evil Dead 2013 director Fede Alvarez.
As shared via THR, Fede Alvarez penned the Alien film with his frequent collaborator Rodo Sayagues. Now production for the film is being prepped to begin in Budapest on March 9. With less than a week before filming starts, the complete cast for the project has also been announced.
Cailee Spaeny is set to star in the film “in a role that is being compared to the one played by Sigourney Weaver in the initial Alien movies.” She’ll be joined by David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Spike Fearn and Aileen Wu in addition to Isabela Merced.
Naturally, plot details at this point in time are being kept scarce. But it’s been stated that “this now-ninth installment of the franchise will focus on a group of young people.”
“On a distant colony, the group finds themselves in a fight for their lives with the titular alien, a creature known as a Xenomorph, whose race propagates by implanting eggs into people’s stomachs via face-huggers, with the juveniles eventually violently bursting out of the host’s chest.”
It looks as though this entry will be taking a return to basics for the franchise. The most recent two installments acted as indirect prequels to the original Alien. As a result, they focused less on the Xenomorphs and more on the Engineers – a race of humanoid aliens previously glimpsed at in the original film.
Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates on this highly-anticipated Alien project as we have them. It’ll be interesting to see what direction Fede Alvarez takes this long-running horror and sci-fi franchise. Especially after so many deviations in recent years.
