In addition to Barbie, Christopher Nolan‘s new film Oppenheimer has been a hit with audiences. Unfortunately, in some territories, there are elements from the film that appear to be less than favorable. Specifically, sex scenes featuring Florence Pugh have been censored in some countries showing Oppenheimer.
The edited version of the film has been shown in territories including India and Pakistan. For those viewers, there were a number of different censorship techniques used. And, naturally, they tend to feel very strange and out of place. There’s one decision in particular that uses CGI which has many moviegoers scratching their heads.
While some shots include zooming into Pugh’s face or blurring her back, one sequence of Pugh sitting naked has been transformed altogether. Now Pugh is shown to be sitting in the chair with a CGI black dress. It’s certainly a choice as you can see below:

Of course, the sequences could have been removed altogether, which would have no doubt been worse. The film depends heavily on the relationship between Cillian Murphy‘s character and Pugh’s. So with that in mind, at least the territories releasing the film knew that they had to respect the plot enough to keep the scenes in. Even if it required some rather strange editing to make it work.
It’s worth noting that the film has received other complaints as well. This includes a scene from the film’s first sex sequence in which Oppenheimer reads the sacred Hindu text. “I am become death. The destroyer of worlds,” he reads from the Bhagavad Git.
The Information Commissioner for the government of India, Uday Mahurkar, released the following response:
