The first Spawn movie adaptation from 1997 is, to date, also the last. However, it’s not for lack of trying, as Spawn creator Todd McFarlane has shared numerous updates over the years about a reboot. Now he’s delivered a brand-new update regarding the status of the new Spawn movie.
It was previously revealed that Todd McFarlane was collaborating with Blumhouse on the project. Additionally, he confirmed that Scott Silver, Malcom Spellman, and Matthew Mixon were hired to write the screenplay. It seemed like things were moving forward at a positive pace – with Jamie Foxx set to star.
As shared with ComicBook.com, however, things at this point could go either way. McFarlane has revealed that this year could, in fact, “make or break” the reboot. He further explained what this meant.
According to McFarlane, Blumhouse has only one year left to essentially make the movie. Otherwise, McFarlane is going to find a different avenue to get the project off the ground. Of course, that could either make it an even slower – or faster – process to get the film made.
Here’s what he shared about the importance of 2024:
“2024 is gonna be my make or break anyways, right? Either I’m gonna give Hollywood the best chance I can to do it and, if not, I’ve got plenty of outside investors waiting. So I’m trying to see if we can make the right deal within the norm of the Hollywood structure. If not, there have been plenty of examples, actually, a couple big ones last year, where people went outside the normal channel and succeeded. And people have done this before with independent movies; you make your movie and you just find a distributor.”
“That one, I could do in a heartbeat,” McFarlane continues. “Fingers crossed, I’m gonna give as much of an effort to those that live within the confines of it. Obviously, Jason Blum is one of the better ones at getting things done. They tell me I get to read the script this month, so the email’s going out this week to remind them that they promised me that. Something’s gotta happen, something’s gonna happen, I just know myself. Something’s gonna happen because if I can’t figure it out inside, I’ll figure it out outside. But, hopefully, we can figure out a deal that keeps all the parties that have been involved over the years involved.”
It seems as though Todd McFarlane hopes to make the film with Blumhouse given the work so many have put into it already. If that doesn’t work out, however, then he’s willing to get it made elsewhere. Either way, he insists the film will be made, regardless of how long it’s taken to get to this point.
We’ll just have to see, along with McFarlane, if 2024 is the year the new Spawn movie gets made. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for any additional updates regarding the highly-anticipated project as we have them.
