ABC has a rather varied library of content for their network, and unfortunately, it can be divisive deciding what needs to be renewed or canceled. Sometimes, however, something even more unexpected can happen – and that’s the factor that has fans surprised as ABC cancels another beloved series.
At the very least, however, the network is claiming that it will simply be pulled “indefinitely.” This phrasing can mean a lot in the world of entertainment.
It could mean that ABC will sort things out and renew the series, or that fans will simply have to accept it won’t return as ABC fully cancels the program.
Either way, things aren’t looking good for the time being, as shared via Deadline:
“There will be no more Jimmy Kimmel on TV for the foreseeable future after the late-night host offered his take on the reaction to the fatal shooting of Charlie Kirk.”
Many celebrities and influencers have shared their thoughts on the recent murder of Charlie Kirk. Views have been divisive, however, and some have been rather extreme. As such, networks and platforms are making tough decisions to try and keep the peace, and that now seemingly includes the series Jimmy Kimmel Live! being pulled “indefinitely.”
As shared by an ABC spokesperson:
“Jimmy Kimmel Live! will be preempted indefinitely.”
This lines up with a statement shared by Nexstar when the company pulled the series from 32 ABC affiliates it owns throughout its total 200 stations in the United States:
“Nexstar’s owned and partner television stations affiliated with the ABC Television Network will preempt Jimmy Kimmel Live! for the foreseeable future beginning with tonight’s show,” the company shared. “Nexstar strongly objects to recent comments made by Mr. Kimmel concerning the killing of Charlie Kirk and will replace the show with other programming in its ABC-affiliated markets.”
The controversy began when Kimmel gave the following statement during his opening monologue for Jimmy Kimmel Live! on September 15:
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel stated.
We’ll have to see how this situation plays out. For now, it looks like ABC has their mind set on keeping the series off the air as it potentially cancels it for good – or at least until things cool down. Stay tuned to ScreenGeek for more details as we have them.
