Netflix’s acquisition of Warner Bros. is a move that’s shocked the entire entertainment industry. However it plays out, the filmmaking industry will forever be changed, and both moviegoers and industry employees are eagerly waiting to see how things pan out. As for now, some changes are obvious, and it looks like a popular HBO Max series will be moving to Netflix.
Netflix and HBO Max have already had the occasional series cross over in the past. This would be one of Netflix’s acquisitions as a result of acquiring the greater Warner Bros. library, however, and fans of the series should be understandably eager to see what that means for the property moving forward.
While many of these details have yet to be revealed, we do know that Netflix has big plans once they are approved to fully acquire Warner Bros., and this series will no doubt play a role. It’s already become one of Warner Bros.’ biggest IPs, with plenty of spin-offs out or in the works, and Netflix will no doubt continue that trend.
This series, Game of Thrones, first premiered on HBO in 2011. It ran until 2019 with a total of 73 episodes across eight seasons. Though the show’s final season wasn’t as universally acclaimed as its preceding seasons, fans have overall praised the series as one of the greatest television shows of all-time, and many of the spin-offs have been equally favored by fans.
As such, it’s interesting to think that Netflix will soon have control of the Game of Thrones HBO series and similar rights to the property. Obviously this is only one small piece of the greater Warner Bros. library. But with the massive global appeal that Game of Thrones has, fans will have to keep a close eye on how Netflix handles the HBO series going forward.
