Fans of the 2019 film Detective Pikachu will be happy to know the sequel now has a director attached. Portlandia co-creator Jonathan Krisel has been tapped to direct the Detective Pikachu continuation.
The 2019 film was a critical and financial success. As such, many fans were shocked that it’s taken so long to have a sequel put together. Now it looks like the cards have finally fallen into place.
As shared via Deadline, Krisel has entered “negotiations to direct the Pokémon Detective Pikachu live-action sequel based on the globally popular Pokémon franchise for Legendary Entertainment.” They’ve also noted that “Chris Galletta will write the script for the follow-up to Legendary’s 2019 box office hit.”
Hopefully we’ll have more details regarding the project soon. At the time of this writing, there aren’t any plot details available. Though it’s been stated by insiders that they “believe [Ryan] Reynolds will have some part to play in the upcoming sequel.”
The Pokémon franchise has been a major hit with fans both young and old for decades now. However, Detective Pikachu was the first live-action iteration of the brand. And while there appears to be a live-action Pokémon Netflix series in the works – it’ll be exciting to see a return to the world that Detective Pikachu established in 2019.
Rob Letterman directed the original Detective Pikachu film which starred Ryan Reynolds, Ken Watanabe, Justice Smith, and Kathryn Newton. The film managed to earn more than $430 million at the worldwide box office. It’s clear that Legendary Entertainment hopes to have yet another cinematic blockbuster on their hands.
Fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates regarding the highly-anticipated Detective Pikachu sequel as we have them. For now, it’ll be exciting to see what director Jonathan Kristel and writer Chris Galletta have in store for fans of the Pokémon multimedia franchise.
