In what sounds like a scene from a political Texas Chainsaw Massacre sequel, a Swedish scientist recently brought up the suggestion of cannibalism in an effort to combat global climate change.
Magnus Soderlund, a professor and researcher at the Stockholm School of Economics suggested the idea while speaking during a panel titled “Can You Imagine Eating Human Flesh?” at the Gastro Summit.
According to Soderlund, “conservative” taboos against cannibalism could change over time, as long as we were to “awaken the idea.”
In fact, Soderlund said he was already open to the idea of eating human flesh.
“I feel somewhat hesitant but to not appear overly conservative…I’d have to say….I’d be open to at least tasting it,” he told Sweden’s TV4.
But, much like something Renfield would do in Bram Stoker’s Dracula, he believes we could start our practice by eating insects and next pets before moving onto the human deceased. Yikes.
It’s worth noting that the cannibalization of human bodies is not actually healthy in any way. The consumption of human flesh can lead to a disease called Kuru, which is caused by an infectious protein found in the human brain.
Let’s just hope that everyone involved with the idea learned to drop it after the “Can You Imagine Eating Human Flesh?” panel. It’s certainly a bizarre suggestion that, and I can not stress this enough, sounds like a deleted subplot from Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation.
Hopefully people can come up with better, practical answers to climate change in the future. Because if cannibalism is the best we can come up with, then I’ll pick climate change over that.
How do you feel that cannibalism is being suggested as a practical method by scientists to combat global climate change? Are you intrigued or disturbed by the concept? Let us know in the comments section down below!
