As for usual with the Oscars, this is a relatively safe list of nominees with little deviation from the norm. It would have been more reflective of this year’s influential works if a film like Knives Out or an actor like Adam Sandler were recognized instead. It is interesting to note that Joker led the slate with 11 nominations, making it a potential dark horse in the Best Picture race.
