One of the most popular Roald Dahl stories is none other than Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which has been successfully adapted into two memorable Warner Bros films. Now a new adaptation, in the form of a prequel simply titled Wonka, is currently in the works. The new film stars actor Timothee Chalamet as the titular Wonka, and now our first look at Chalamet as the character has been revealed. And, excitingly, it’s exactly how you’d expected to see the iconic character.
As revealed via Timothee Chalamet’s Twitter, you can clearly see the actor in his Willy Wonka garb:

He also added the following caption on his Instagram:
“The suspense is terrible, I hope it will last,” he teased.
Fans should remember the line as a memorable quote from the original 1971 Warner Bros adaptation, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. While this new film will act more directly as a prequel to the original story, it’s clear that it will also be taking influences from previous film adaptations of said story. And considering just how iconic the 1971 film in particular has become, it’s definitely a smart move on Warner Bros. In fact, it’s even been said that the new film will also feature musical numbers as previous adaptations have.
It’ll also be interesting to see just how Timothee Chalamet’s take on the character will fit in with the charismatic interpretations created by Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp. This makes the first look at Timothee Chalamet in Wonka all the more exciting. Hopefully we’ll get to see more of the film soon. But considering we won’t be seeing the movie until 2023, it could be awhile. Nevertheless, fans can stay tuned to ScreenGeek for updates on the film as we have them.
Wonka is being directed by Paul King from a screenplay he wrote with Simon Farnaby.
The upcoming Charlie and the Chocolate Factory prequel Wonka will be released on March 17, 2023.
