There’s always potential for a new video game adaptation, but this time it seems like the least expected video game will be getting a live-action take. It’s been announced that the classic arcade game Pac-Man will be adapted as a live-action feature film from Bandai Namco Entertainment and Warfarer Studios.
This information, as shared via THR, does not contain any plot details for the project. As such, it’s unclear how the filmmakers involved intend to bring such a two-dimensional character as Pac-Man into the real world. But considering that the property has been adapted into animated television projects in the past, there are certainly any number of directions they could use for the film. As such, it’ll be an interesting project to keep an eye on.
Here’s what they had to say:
“The project hails from Bandai Namco Entertainment — the company behind PAC-MAN, as well as games like Galaga and Tekken — and Wayfarer Studios, the production company founded by Justin Baldoni and Steve Sarowitz.”
Furthermore, they shared that the film “will be based on an original idea from Chuck Williams (Sonic the Hedgehog) of Lightbeam Entertainment.” While they were unable to share what this original idea is, as stated above, they did reveal the producers attached to the project. We can expect Justin Baldoni, Manu Gargi, and Andrew Calof to produce via Wayfarer Studios with Tracy Ryerson developing. Meanwhile, Chuck Williams and Tim Kwok will both be producing for Lightbeam Entertainment.
Fans can certainly stay tuned to ScreenGeek for additional updates on this project as we have them. The iconic video game character has become a mainstay in pop culture for decades now. In addition to the aforementioned animated television projects, the character has also been referenced in other projects such as the live-action film Pixels. Hopefully we’ll have more details and what exactly the take for this new interpretation will be in the near future. With successful video game adaptations like Sonic the Hedgehog and Detective Pikachu in recent years, there’s certainly a lot of hope to see this one come to fruition.
